What Is FFMI?
FFMI stands for Fat-Free Mass Index. It measures how much lean muscle mass you carry relative to your height, making it one of the most useful tools for athletes, bodybuilders, and anyone serious about building muscle.
The formula divides your fat-free mass (in kg) by the square of your height (in meters), with a correction factor for height. A normalized FFMI above 25 is considered exceptionally muscular and was historically used as a marker to assess natural vs. enhanced athleticism.
FFMI Ranges for Men and Women
For men: below 18 is below average, 18–20 is average, 20–22 is above average, 22–25 is excellent, and above 25 is elite/exceptional. For women, values run approximately 3–4 points lower across all categories.
Why FFMI Is Better Than BMI for Gym-Goers
BMI penalizes muscular people. A 90 kg man at 180 cm with very low body fat would show an “overweight” BMI — yet FFMI would correctly classify him as highly muscular. If you train regularly, FFMI is the metric that actually reflects your progress.
FAQ
Can women use the FFMI calculator? Yes, and it’s equally valuable for tracking muscle-building progress regardless of gender.
What’s a realistic natural FFMI ceiling? Research suggests 25–26 for men as a practical natural limit with optimal training and nutrition over many years.
