What Is the Skinfold Method?
The skinfold method estimates body fat by measuring the thickness of subcutaneous fat (the fat directly under the skin) at specific points on the body using calipers. The 3-point version measures three sites and uses a validated formula to estimate total body fat percentage.
For men, the three sites are typically chest, abdomen, and thigh. For women, they are triceps, suprailiac (just above the hip), and thigh. These sites were chosen because they reliably reflect overall fat distribution patterns.
How Accurate Is It?
With proper technique, the 3-point skinfold method is accurate to within 3–4% of lab measurements. It requires basic calipers (available for under €10) and practice to get consistent results. Having the same person take your measurements each time reduces variability.
FAQ
Do I need special equipment? Basic plastic skinfold calipers cost very little and are widely available online.
Is this method suitable for home use? Yes, especially if you have someone to help with hard-to-reach measurement sites.
